The 4Runner’s cabin looks dated, but the large, simple controls help reduce distraction.

The 4Runner feels dated but fills a niche for loyal fans who appreciate it for the rugged vehicle it is. Standard driver-assist technologies include adaptive cruise control, emergency front braking, lane departure alert, automatic high-beam headlamps, and the newly standard blind-spot monitoring. The 4Runner excels at cargo space with up to 47.2 cubic-feet, with a wide and squared-off liftgate opening, storage bins over the rear wheel wells and an available slide-out deck that brings items within easy reach. At 32.9 inches, second-row legroom isn’t as generous as in its competitors, but it’s still adequate for most passengers. The cabin is dated-looking but the controls are simple and easy to use, and the seats are supportive and comfortable.

The TRD Off-Road trims include a locking rear differential, and the TRD Pro further adds Fox shocks for the highest level of off-road performance. The engine is thirsty, rated at 17 mpg in combined driving where the Ford Explorer rates as high as 23 mpg, but it’s also time-tested and generally earns high marks for reliability. Handling is lackluster, and the ride is firm and truck-like. ToyotaĪll 4Runner trims use a 4.0-liter V6 engine that makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. A new “Solar Octane” orange shade is added to the TRD trims for 2023, but the 4Runner stays mostly unchanged for another year. The SR5, SR5 Premium and Limited can be optioned with a third row for seven-passenger seating, but at just 29.3 inches of legroom back there, it’s a very tight fit. The 4Runner competes with family-style SUVs such as the Ford Explorer, Honda Passport and Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the off-road trims will cross-shop against models like the Ford Bronco or Jeep Wrangler. Trims that come only in 4×4 are the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary and the TRD Pro, the lineup priciest at $54,020. Other trims offering both drivelines are the TRD Sport, SR5 Premium and the Limited. The 4Runner comes in eight trims, starting with the SR5 at $39,555 in 4×2 and at $41,430 in 4×4, not including a delivery fee of $1,335. Other features new for 2023 are a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and a rear-seat reminder standard on all trims, and new Solar Octane orange paint available on TRD trims. To mark the milestone, the 4Runner adds a 40th Anniversary Special Edition trim, in four-wheel drive only and with retro-style stripes and grille, with 4,040 units available in the U.S. It hasn’t been substantially updated in 14 years and it shows, but fans love it for its solid and rugged feel, straightforward cabin design and controls, and the great-outdoors ability of its TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trims. At 190.2 inches in length, it’s in the midsize segment but unlike many unibody competitors, it has body-on-frame construction. The Toyota 4Runner celebrates its fortieth birthday in 2023.
